MEMORIES OF A FUTURE PAST
ALTERNATE REALITIES EXHIBITION 2014
MEMORIES OF A FUTURE PAST (ERINNERUNGEN AN EINE ZUKUNFT GEFÜHRT / 未来の思い出は渡された)
A collaborative piece with artist and designer Kelvin Kottke, Memories Of A Future Past presents scattered memories of a past where the second World War ended differently. However, rather than emphasizing the political outcome, this piece explores the overwhelming influence of German and Japanese culture on consumerism. The aim was to create a nostalgia that is at once uncanny yet familiar, due to the international prevalence of German and Japanese even today. This piece is also a personal investigation for both artists involved as it questions what our memories would have been like had we grown up fully immersed in our respective heritages. This was part of the Alternate Realities Exhibition held at the New World School of the Arts Gallery.
The installation embodies a collection of nostalgic posters and graphics inspired and reconstructed from 80's and 90's memorabilia. Projected at the center of the collage is a looping video of ads and animations that reflect graphics contained on the walls, while a soundtrack, reminiscent of old shopping malls in Japan and Germany, plays in the background.
Timel-ss is a company geared to make an economical statement about today’s technology and culture while maintaining a fashion-conscious spirit. While these products ironically do not actually tell time, they are specifically designed to perform one function: accessorize. These products are geared towards anyone looking for unconventional and unique products.
Ever since the rise of smart phones In the modern world, watches and clocks have become less of a necessity and more of decor. With the time of day so readily accessable in a device that rarely leaves one's hands, watches are bought more for its traditional value than its original function. Timel-ss touches on how changing technology is altering the functions of traditional clockwork by turning them into accessories.
Mémoire / Mona Lavande
Package design for the product Mémoire, a do-it-yourself kit for implanting synthetic memories. This package is featured in the short film Mona Lavande, where a young girl explores the Mémoire kit and invites the viewer in as she unboxes the product and injects her new memories in a not too distant future (very much like our own reality today).
Mona Lavande was self-directed and shot. See credits at the end for more info.
Half & Half: A Search
Half & Half: A Search discusses the notion of self-identity through my experiences growing up as a twin.
These unique experiences have led me to question my perception of individuality, independence, and self-value. I explore these concepts through the use of language and how it has played a pivotal role in the molding of my psychological being.
The work is a giant word search installed directly onto the wall. The piece consists of various fonts to create an overwhelming block of text, while adding texture and dimension to the work. While playing with the idea of searching for one’s self, viewers will inevitably attempt to look for recognizable words to no avail, as the wall will not contain a single word in the English language, echoing my endless search to understand my self-perception. The text also references a hidden language that only my sister and I understand and communicate with each other. The ladder’s purpose is to further emphasize the feeling that one is reaching a conclusion only to be led nowhere but back to the start.
Exhibited at The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) for "ET. AL" New World School of the Arts Bachelor of Fine Arts Showcase 2014.
Portfolio of work is included into a printed book with my logo.
Summer Dreams: Nightowl & Nightingale
Summertime mixed CD and posters
A collection of upbeat summer songs made into an eclectic mix. This was made as a gift for Kelvin K. to celebrate a milestone together and the approaching season.
The imagery reflects ideas of summer in Miami. The album contains two discs, each with its own unique vibe and energy. Two posters are included with the CD case, both versing the same quote in different graphics to reflect the personality of each disc.
A typographical project using black and white Helvetica and another font of choice for the 26 letters of the alphabet. Each letter in the alphabet is represented as a word found in astronomy and depicted in two typographical solutions.
Inspired by the 2008 Summer Olympics' Bird's Nest Stadium, Avian is a typeface characterized by its harsh angular edges which are juxtaposed with its curvilinear accents. Because this stadium was designed in Beijing, it was important for me to maintain its eastern nature and essence.
The characters were designed from the shapes and curves of the stadium's exterior architecture. This typeface comes with three weights: Medium (Regular), Bold, and Light. There are 48 characters which include letters, numbers, and some special characters.
Avian will be up for sale in the near future.
